Amkara can provide consulting and support services for a wide range of popular Open Source applications and services. Below are some of the solutions we have recently worked on for clients. If an application or solution that you are interested is not listed, please do contact us as it is likely that we have worked with it previously and can help.
Apache Web Server
Apache has long been the most widely used web server on the Internet. It is often selected for its power, flexibility and widespread support. With a dynamic runtime module system, its functionality can easily be extended to provide native support for compression, authentication, virtual hosts and server side languages like PHP.
Amkara have experience of deploying Apache in various configurations for clients including single host, multi host load balanced and as a reverse proxy.
MySQL/MariaDB Database
MySQL/MariaDB is one of the world’s most popular RDMS and a key component of many open source application stacks including LAMP and LEMP.
Amkara have installed and maintained MySQL/MariaDB databases for both commercial and custom applications, including the configuration of master-slave replication in order to provide a fail-over capability.
Nagios Server
Nagios is an industry leading IT infrastructure monitoring system. It can constantly monitor the health and availability of computers, hardware, websites and services, alerting staff the instant an abnormal condition is detected. The logging and graphing of monitoring data over time can also provide a unique insight into infrastructure behaviour and trends that can highlight problems before they occur.
Amkara have built and configured a number of Nagios servers for clients. These have frequently allowed the identification and resolution of service and infrastructure issues before customers and end users were aware of a problem.
Nginx Web Server
Nginx was written specifically to overcome some of the performance issues that Apache suffers from when trying to handle a high number of concurrent connections. With an asynchronous events driven architecture and light weight worker processes, Nginx can scale to handle thousands of connections without the CPU and memory consumption issues of Apache. Concentrating on the core responsibility of serving static web content Nginx proxies and hands off dynamic content requests, such as PHP, to external processors. This can complicate the overall web service architecture but does allow Nginx to serve static content very efficiently.
Postfix Email Server
Postfix is a fully featured Mail Transfer Agent that routes and delivers e-mail. It was written to provide high performance, reliable, secure e-mail delivery and is the MTA of choice for more than a third of the world’s e-mail servers. Its base functionality is easily extended with 3rd party applications that can provide additional deep content inspection (anti-virus and anti-spam), authentication protocols (DMARC, DKIM, SPF) and access policies (greylisting).
Amkara have provisioned Postfix as both a primary mail host with the Dovcot and as an external Bastion Host paired with an internal Postfix MTA to route email securely in to and out of an organisation.
Pydio Server
Pydio, formerly AjaxExplorer, is a file sharing and synchronization server. It supports a range of web, mobile and desktop clients, allowing users to manage and access their documents from almost any platform. With the Pydio installed and hosted on your own server or cloud infrastructure you always remain in complete control of your data and its security.
Amkara have successfully deployed Pydio for a number of clients who required a more sophisticated and flexible file sharing solution than an SFTP server.
Resource Tracker Ticketing System
Best Practical’s RT is a powerful web-based GUI ticketing system that allows support teams to efficiently manage user issues and communications. With tight email integration, custom workflows and with a wide range of extensions
Amkara have installed and maintained the RT ticketing system. This work has included the integration of the RT-Mailgate with Exim and Qmail in order to correctly attach and route e-mail from and to tickets.
SFTP Server
The Secure File Transfer Protocol provides file access, transfer and management capabilities similar to FTP. As an extension SSH rather than FTP, data is encrypted in transit and strong end point authentication can be implemented. With a wide range of client applications and browser plugins supporting the protocol, it can be a great solution if you need to securely share files with customers.
Amkara have installed and managed SFTP servers for clients that required the ability to share files with customers without the inherent vulnerability of using a third party service.
Subversion Version Control Server
Subversion is a revision control system that manages changes to files and directories. All modifications are recorded allowing you to track changes and revert to any previous version when required.
Amkara have built a Subversion server with a web interface and administration tool that gave a client an auditable document management solution that met their ISO9001 quality requirements.
WordPress
WordPress is a great Content Management System for small to medium websites. Its simple interface makes it easy for users to easily create and maintain their own website site content. With a huge range of 3rd party plugins and templates it is also straight forward to extend functionality and modify appearance.
At Amkara we have installed, configured and run WordPress on both LAMP and LEMP stacks for our clients.
